The Pike County Sheriff’s Office reported today (July 31, 2025) that the PCSO's Patrol Division, along with the Gang Unit, attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a red passenger car at the intersection of Bala Chitto Rd and Pike 93 Central. The vehicle fled from deputies onto Highway 48, prompting a pursuit.

During the chase, the suspect vehicle lost control and crashed into a Mississippi Department of Transportation work truck before careening into a wooded area. The driver, identified as Mr. Jamarion Pounds from Magnolia, was taken into custody and is currently facing pending felony charges.

Upon further investigation, deputies discovered stolen firearms and controlled substances inside the vehicle.

Sheriff Jones stated, "We are committed to doing everything we can to protect the citizens of Pike County. We aggressively investigate gun and gang issues within our county and are serious about apprehending those offenders."

High-Steaks Heist Foiled in Slidell

The Slidell Police reports that Tuesday (July 29, 2025) evening, the SPD Canine and Narcotics Division ran into a '𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘦' situation which started as a typical traffic stop.

Officers observed a vehicle traveling down Old Spanish Trail and noticed it didn’t have functioning brake lights. They decided to pull the vehicle over, and upon contacting the two male occupants, officers noticed both men were acting unusually nervous. Was it the flashing lights? No. Were there drugs in the car? Also, no. Their anxiety stemmed from something else entirely . . . a good old-fashioned beef heist.

Officers found inside the vehicle approximately $1,500 worth of USDA ribeye steaks and slabs of beef brisket. Moments before being pulled over, the pair had gone on a ‘five-finger discount’ shopping spree. Instead of firing up the grill, both suspects, identified as 55-year-old John Garriga (Gulfport, MS) and 66-year-old Charles Walker (Biloxi, MS), ended up behind bars on felony theft and possession of stolen property charges.

A Rescue in the East Pearl River Marsh

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office reported today (July 30, 2025) that when a 57-year-old crabber didn’t return home from the East Pearl River, his family knew something wasn’t right. They told deputies he was partially paralyzed on his left side due to a previous medical condition, and that he hadn’t been heard from since 10 a.m.

STPSO Marine Division, Sgt. Chuck White and Deputy John Hrabley, were dispatched alongside Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Family members described his usual launch point and route, and Sgt. White and Deputy Hrabley followed that trail into the marsh. What they found was nothing short of terrifying. The man’s boat was partially submerged. His motor had failed. His phone had gone underwater. And he was in the water…exhausted, alone, and without any way to call for help. Stranded for nearly nine hours, unable to move freely due to his medical condition, and surrounded by marshland, he was out of options… until Sgt. White and Deputy Hrabley found him.

The man was turned over to medical personnel, evaluated, and brought safely home that night.

The STPSO post stated, “This is what we do. And on this day, it saved a life."

Two Arrested in Multi-Agency Drug Investigation in Tangipahoa Parish

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO), in collaboration with several law enforcement partners, has arrested 47 year-old Jaronge Durr and 45 year-old Tashaundra Wilson in connection with a drug operation based in the city limits of Independence and the Tickfaw area.

Earlier this month, a tip from our partners at Independence Police directed attention toward a home on Guzzardo Lane in the city limits, as well as Woodhaven Road in Tickfaw, as possible significant drug trafficking hubs in those communities. Following several days of surveillance operations, TPSO identified Durr and Wilson as potential suspects and obtained search warrants for the residences.

On Tuesday (July 29, 2025), TPSO Narcotics detectives were joined by the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office, agents with the New Orleans Field Office of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Independence Police Department to conduct those searches which turned up almost $180,000 worth of various drugs, including Fentanyl, Cocaine, Heroin, Meth, and a Heroin-Fentanyl mix. Four different weapons were also discovered along with $21,000 in cash and suspected associated assets. Both suspects were arrested on those search warrant scenes without incident and booked on numerous charges.

This case remains active with additional investigative efforts expected.

Medicaid Millionaire from Slidell Arrested

Agents with Attorney General Liz Murrill's Louisiana Bureau of Investigation (LBI) arrested 35 year-old Candace Taylor of Slidell for Government Benefits Fraud on Monday (July 28, 2025)

Special Agents assigned to the LBI received a complaint from the Louisiana Department of Health in reference to Taylor allegedly committing Medicaid Recipient Fraud. The complaint alleged that Taylor underreported her income in order to receive Medicaid benefits.

The affidavit states that between January 2020 and December 2024, Taylor's multiple businesses collectively generated over $9.5 million in revenue across various accounts controlled by her. And in 2020, despite being approved for Medicaid and claiming to possess no income, records reveal Taylor's account recorded deposits of more than $480,000, more than $45,000 in vehicle payments to Audi Finance, multiple six-figure withdrawals via cashier's checks to fund property purchases, cosmetic surgery, high-end jewelry, and luxury services. Along with a $100,000 wire transfer to an exotic car dealership, followed by a $13,000 debit card transaction for the acquisition of a 2022 Lamborghini Urus.

In 2024, just two months after the purchase of the Lamborghini, Taylor contacted LDH to renew her Medicaid benefits, alleging the income of $2,000 per month, while omitting the fact that she was a business owner. Arrest records also show that agents saw several social media posts made by Taylor on Facebook and Instagram highlighting her luxury acquisitions.

Troubleshooting Raised Bed Problems: Part 1

Many of us grow vegetables and other plants in raised beds. They’re helpful where drainage is poor. Even where it isn’t, they can make weed management easier and reduce the amount of bending required to grow a garden.

However, raised beds are not always without problems. I’ve had a couple of calls recently from people who had, I suspect, used too much high-nutrient material and ended up with beds that had excessively high salt contents. When we speak of salt in this context, we’re not talking about table salt but about many types of ions, including plant nutrients, that can contribute to salt stress for plants.

The materials used in a raised bed also affect pH. Most vegetables do well between pH 6.0 and 6.5, so gardeners should be cautious about materials that are much more acidic or alkaline.

When building a raised bed, it’s helpful to include some organic materials that have high levels of plant nutrients, but consider the amount that you’re using. Composts vary widely in their contents. Those made from animal manures sometimes have high nutrient and salt contents, while those made from yard waste often have relatively low nutrient levels. (Manure-based composts also bring to mind microbe-related food safety, but I won’t try to address that here.) Mushroom composts tend to have high salt contents and high pHs. These types of materials can be good in moderation, but they usually need to be blended with other, low-nutrient materials.

When people run into problems with their raised beds, they sometimes send the substrate for testing as a routine soil sample. The process used to test soil was developed for field soil (mixtures of sand, silt, and/or clay, with a small amount of organic matter). When these procedures are used on mixtures made up primarily of organic materials, as most raised bed substrates are, the results do not accurately reflect what the plants experience. The nutrient contents shown in these soil reports from raised beds are often much higher than what the plants will be exposed to in the short term.

The LSU Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Laboratory suggests sending substrates that are less than 20% field soil as potting mix samples instead of soil samples. Routine potting mix samples cost $15 each instead of the $11 it costs for a routine soil sample, and the test used requires a greater volume of material.

Potting mix sample reports include results for pH and for concentrations of nitrate, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and soluble salts. The reports provide interpretations of the results, such as “low,” “very high,” and “optimum,” which are helpful when troubleshooting. However, they don’t provide recommendations about how to fertilize, so you may need to contact us for guidance.

In the next article, I’ll write about a couple of other issues people encounter.

Let me know if you have questions.

81-year-old Slidell Man Gets 35 Years in Prison For Sexual Assault of Young Girl Caught on Video

District Attorney Collin Sims reports that on July 8, 2025, Judge Tara Zeller sentenced 81-year-old Richard James Nyberg of Slidell to 35 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of sexual battery of a child and indecent behavior with a juvenile.  Assistant District Attorneys Gary Tromblay and Iain Dover prosecuted the case and Detective Matthew Bauer with the Slidell Police Department led the investigation.

Nyberg was caught on video sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl while the girl was asleep.  The girl, along with her grandmother, had been temporarily sharing a Slidell residence with Nyberg.  The grandmother had grown suspicious of Nyberg’s behavior around the child so she set up a concealed camera and pointed it at the girl’s bed.  On the morning of August 1, 2024, the grandmother reviewed the video footage from the previous night and saw that it had recorded Nyberg sexually assaulting the girl.  The grandmother immediately called 911 and Slidell Police Department officers were dispatched to the residence.  When officers arrived at the residence, the victim’s grandmother explained what had happened and provided the video to the officers.  After confirming the video showed Nyberg sexually abusing the child, officers arrested Nyberg.  As he was being arrested, Nyberg told the child’s grandmother that she would regret having him arrested.

Opioid Initiative Update from the 22nd JDC District Attorney's Office

The 22nd JDC District Attorney’s Office provides the following update on the progress of its ongoing
Opioid Initiative—a comprehensive, multi-agency effort to combat the devastating impact of opioid abuse and fentanyl distribution in our communities:

The opioid crisis continues to take a tragic toll both nationally and locally. Across the United States, more than 80,000 overdose deaths were reported last year, with nearly half—approximately 40,000—linked to fentanyl. In St. Tammany Parish alone, 2024 saw over 400 overdoses and 115 confirmed fatalities. Washington Parish saw 27 overdose deaths in 2024.

Fentanyl remains the leading cause of overdose deaths in the U.S. Due to its low cost, extreme potency, and prevalence in counterfeit pills, it poses a lethal threat to unsuspecting users. In response to this growing emergency, the District Attorney’s Office launched a unified, multi-agency initiative focused on reducing the supply of illicit opioids, dismantling drug trafficking networks, and increasing public awareness and education.

Since the launch of the initiative, the task force has made significant strides:

  • Seized over 500,000 fentanyl-laced pills and more than 6,000 grams of powdered fentanyl.
  • Removed more than 3,000 grams of methamphetamine and 8,000 grams of cocaine from the streets.
  • Conducted numerous controlled purchases and executed multiple state and federal search warrants targeting key suppliers and distributors.

In one recent high-impact case, the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Fentanyl Overdose Response Team seized over 5 kilograms of counterfeit blue M30 pills laced with fentanyl—an amount potent enough to kill more than one million people, or approximately 21% of Louisiana’s population. Following the arrest of this large-scale dealer, surrounding North Shore agencies have reported a notable decrease in overdose incidents.

Additionally, the District Attorney’s Office recently secured a second-degree murder indictment against Paige Andrews in connection with a fatal overdose. Her co-conspirator, Dustin Carver, was also indicted for Distribution of Fentanyl. This case represents a major milestone in our efforts to hold drug dealers criminally accountable for overdose deaths. The investigation was conducted jointly by the DEA’s Fentanyl Overdose Response Team, the 22nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office, the Louisiana State Police Region I Narcotics/Violent Crimes Task Force, and the Slidell Police Department’s Narcotics Division.

This initiative would not be possible without the unwavering support of our law enforcement partners, including:

  • DEA Fentanyl Overdose Response Team (Supervisor William Johnson)
  • Louisiana State Police Region I Narcotics/Violent Crimes Task Force (Lt. John Miller)
  • Hammond Police Department Narcotics Division
  • Slidell Police Department Narcotics Division
  • Covington Police Department Narcotics Division
  • Bogalusa Police Department
  • Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office
  • Homeland Security Investigations (HSI)
  • Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office
  • Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office

While these accomplishments are significant, this fight is far from over. This is not merely a law enforcement challenge- it is a public health crisis. These partners are committed to leveraging every available tool, resource, and strategy to protect citizens, save lives, and bring justice to those who exploit addiction for profit.  The 22nd JDC District Attorney’s Office adopted this aggressive and untraditional approach because the severity of this epidemic demands nothing less. The Initiative is working, and these Law Enforcement Partners are resolute in their commitment to keep going until this poison is eradicated from the streets in our communities.

Bogalusa Man Killed in Head-on Crash On LA 21

On Saturday (July 26, 2025), at approximately 12:30 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash on LA Hwy 21 near Lon Miley Road in Washington Parish. The crash claimed the life of 43-year-old Gary W. Pittman Jr. of Bogalusa.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2008 Dodge Dakota, driven by Pittman, was traveling southbound on LA Hwy 21. Simultaneously, a 2013 GMC Sierra was traveling northbound on LA Hwy 21. For reasons still under investigation, the Dodge crossed the centerline into the northbound lane and struck the GMC head-on.

Pittman, who was properly restrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the GMC, whose seat belt usage is unknown at this time, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology tests were performed on both drivers. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind motorists of the importance of making responsible decisions while operating a motor vehicle. Never drive impaired, ill, fatigued, or distracted. Additionally, Louisiana law requires that every occupant of a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, remain properly restrained at all times. While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions like these can often mean the difference between life and death.

Arden Wells Arrested by TPSO - Charged With Terrorizing

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO) arrested 70 year-old Arden Wells of Ponchatoula Friday (July 25, 2025) on one count of Terrorizing.

TPSO reports that, on June 24, 2025, Wells published false information on social media that an inmate had escaped the Tangipahoa Parish Jail. As there had been an actual escape the month prior, the inaccurate publication created undue concern among the public and resulted in several inquiries about the validity of the information. Following a thorough investigation, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

“Just as the law does not allow someone to falsely yell ‘fire’ in the middle of a theater to create panic, or to publish a fake threat against a school to cancel classes out of fear, a person cannot falsely publicize a concerning event like an inmate escape to scare people and we will not tolerate when they do,” said Sheriff Gerald Sticker.

Terrorizing is defined by Louisiana R.S. Code 14:40.1 as “the intentional communication of information that the commission of a crime of violence is imminent or in progress or that a circumstance dangerous to human life exists or is about to exist, with the intent of causing members of the general public to be in sustained fear for their safety; or causing evacuation of a building, a public structure, or a facility of transportation; or causing other serious disruption to the general public.”

Wells was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail and then transferred to another facility out of an abundance of caution for safety and security.

Two Bogalusans Indicted for Malfeasance in Office

Update: District Attorney Collin Sims reports that the indictments are the initial results of what remains an ongoing multi-agency investigation. Arrest warrants have been issued for both men but have not yet been executed at the time of this release. Arraignment dates remain to be set. Doug Freese, Chief of the District Attorney’s Criminal Division, and Assistant District Attorney Butch Wilson handled the presentation of the case to the grand jury.

A Washington Parish Grand Jury has indicted (filed on July 23, 2025) 64 year-old James M. Patterson, Jr. and 58 year-old James Morris for Malfeasance in Office. Patterson and Morris were both City of Bogalusa public employees employed at all relevant times on or between January 3, 2023 and May 5, 2023.

The Indictment charges that

  1. James Morris, at the direction of Elected Official A, engaged in the misuse of public resources at a private residence in the City of Bogalusa belonging to the mother of Elected Official A
  2. James Morris directed a City of Bogalusa public works crew to perform repairs at the home of Elected Official A's mother that were the responsibility of the homeowner, not the responsibility of the City of Bogalusa
  3. James Morris' actions resulted in the theft of taxpayer funded services and materials valued in excess of $1000.00
  4. James Morris later participated in efforts to disguise the fact that there was an improper benefit provided by him to Elected Official A and/or a member of Elected Official A's family
  5. James Patterson created a falsified paper trail to cover the work performed on April 11, 2023 by city employees at Elected Official A's mother's house in Bogalusa, Louisiana. The paper trail included an I-Worq entry, a work order, and emails. The work order was back dated by James Patterson, and he created an email trail reporting that Elected Official A's mother's plumbing was damaged by city workers
  6. James Patterson created the falsified email trail to protect Elected Official A from public scrutiny related to the theft of taxpayer funded services and materials valued in excess of $1000.00
  7. James Morris at no time made any effort to correct the false assertions made by James Patterson regarding the repair work performed on Elected Official A's mother's residence

Underage Sales Enforcement Nets Arrest, Citations in Tangipahoa Parish

Thanks to the support of a Louisiana Highway Safety Commission (LHSC) grant, 14 business clerks were cited, and one arrested in Tangipahoa Parish, during a series of operations to uncover and address underage tobacco and alcohol sales and use.

Throughout the month of June, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO) deputies, from all divisions, were assigned an additional shift focused solely on identifying businesses, their employees, and customers engaged in unlawful sales of alcohol and tobacco in an effort to reduce underage substance abuse. During the operation, more than 50 retail alcoholic beverage and tobacco establishments were visited where 14 individuals were cited for Unlawful sale, purchase, or possession of tobacco, alternative nicotine products or vapor products.

After refusing to provide identification to deputies, Sahil Wod, age 20 and of Jackson, MS, who was an employee of The Discount Store located on Highway 51 in Independence, was placed under arrest for Possession/Sale of Tobacco By/To Persons under 18.

Sheriff Gerald Sticker wants to commend all of the employees who follow sales laws on a daily basis, as well as the business owners who hold their employees to the standards not only set by the law but the expectations set by our community.

The TPSO is grateful for the opportunity to conduct this operation which was made possible through the Juvenile Underage Drinking Enforcement (JUDE) grant coordinated and funded by the LHSC in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Wanted Man, Illegal Narcotics, Handgun Found During Slidell-area Traffic Stop

Detectives with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Proactive Enforcement Unit were patrolling the area of Highway 190 west in Slidell on Tuesday (July 22, 2025) when they conducted a traffic stop on a purple Nissan Maxima in the Slidell Manor Subdivision. An individual who identified himself as “Nick Ambo” was a passenger seated in the backseat of the vehicle next to a small child.  While conducting the traffic stop, detectives observed marijuana in plain view inside the vehicle.

While detectives were searching the vehicle, “Ambo” fled the scene on foot but, after a brief foot pursuit, “Ambo” was apprehended approximately two blocks away. Detectives then learned that “Ambo” had lied about his identity and was actually 35 year-old Anthony Batiste, a convicted felon who had an open warrant for his arrest.

Inside the vehicle, detectives located a bag on the rear seat near where Batiste had been seated. That bag contained approximately 57 grams of methamphetamine, approximately 3.8 grams of cocaine, approximately 32 grams of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a handgun and a social security card belonging to Anthony Batiste.

Batiste was placed under arrest on the charges of Manufacture, Distribution Schedule II CDS (Methamphetamine), Manufacture, Distribution Schedule I CDS (Marijuana), Possession of Schedule II CDS(Cocaine), Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Illegal Carrying of a Weapon During a Crime of Violence or Felony, Resisting an Officer (2 counts), Illegal Use of CDS in Presence of a Minor, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
