Obituary

Don G. Williams, Sr.

November 6, 1936 - July 15, 2025

On Tuesday, July 15, 2025, Don G. Williams, Sr., went to be with his Lord and Savior. Born on November 6, 1936, he was the son of the late Hubert G. and Verna Mizell Williams.

He attended high school at Chamberlain Hunt Military Academy in Port Gibson, Mississippi. While attending CHA he was captain and played quarterback on the football team and excelled in track, baseball and basketball. During his senior year, he was voted best athlete and was awarded a scholarship to Delta State but chose Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi.

While attending Millsaps, he won the position of quarterback as a freshman and joined the Marine Corps.  After graduation from the University of Mississippi Southern in Hattiesburg, MS, he played semi-pro football with the Hammond Eagles. He taught physical education while coaching football at Bogalusa High School under Athletic Director, Lewis Murray, in the Bogalusa School system until his retirement in 1988.

Continuing his love for the outdoors and sports, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, running his Beagle dogs and golfing, and served on the Pearl River Country Club Board of Directors. He also enjoyed farming and producing grass fed cattle. In 1999, while living on Thunderbird Lake in Cherokee Village, Arkansas for a year, he taught chess to students in the Arkansas public schools. During that time, he also went on a mission trip to the jungles of Surinam, South America to help build housing for a Southern Baptist missionary who was there to minister and offer free dental services to the natives of that area.

A lifelong member of Lee’s Creek Baptist Church founded by his great-grandfather, Captain Mart Williams, he was active in Sunday School and served as teacher of the “old men’s” class for several years.

He is survived by his two sons, Don (Blaine) Williams of Lafayette, LA and Dr. H. Brad Williams of Bogalusa, LA; six grandchildren, Caitlyn Williams Ledet, Seth Williams, and Garrett Williams, all of Lafayette, LA; Hannah Williams-Lafy and Zachary Williams of Virginia; Brynna Williams of Bogalusa, LA; and 5 great-granddaughters. He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother Robert Buren Williams.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm with the funeral services beginning at 2:00 pm. Burial will immediately follow at the gravesite at Lee’s Creek Baptist Church.
