Helen Moses Magee
December 24, 1934 - August 10, 2019



Helen Moses Magee, better known as “Black”, was born on December 24, 1938 to the late Rev. B.B Moses & Martha Moses of Varnado, La. Helen was the 9th out of ten children. On Saturday morning of August 10, 2019, she transitioned from labor to reward.

At an early age she became a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church where her father, the late Rev. B.B. Moses was the pastor. Helen graduated from Central Memorial High School of Bogalusa, La. In 1956, she then relocated to Grambling State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education, in 1960. After graduating, she returned home where she and the love of her life began dating and on September 16, 1961, she and Gary C. Magee were married by her father Rev. B.B. Moses, her pastor. To this union four girls were born, Bridgett, Stephanie, Felicia and Nicole. Prior to this time, Helen became a teacher in the Washington Parish School System as a Home Economics Teacher for 30 years, as well as a semester in Mississippi at the high school in Poplarville, in 1969. She received her master’s degree at Southeastern in Hammond. She and her husband also received their 30 plus degrees from Southeastern University in 1974.

Helen Moses Magee was a lifetime servant, she served her church over the years as the Director of Baptist Training Union, a Sunday School Teacher, and an active member of the Women’s Mission. She served her community by volunteering with the food bank and at one time as a pink lady at the Bogalusa Medical Center.  Helen served her family; she was the glue that held it all together. She was a wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, grand and great-grandmother.

Helen was preceded in death by her daughter Felicia D. Magee; her parents; and eight siblings.

Helen leaves to celebrate her memory:  a husband, Coach Gary C. Magee; three daughters, Bridgett (LaVerne Cook), Stephanie (Ronald Collins), and Nicole (Derrick Walker) and their husbands; six grandchildren: Ashley, Arin, Mia, Ronald Jr., and Mya; four great-grandchildren: Ashad, Ayianna, Jasmyn, and Jakolby; one brother, Rev. Dr. James Moses; one sister: Claranetta Maxwell, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral service will be 11:00AM Friday, August 16, 2019 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist with Rev. Dr. Byron Muse, pastor-officiating. Interment will be held at B.B. Moses Cemetery.
