Obituary

J.M. Fussell
September 19, 1931 - February 04, 2019

JM Fussell, lifelong resident of Enon and Franklinton, went to be with his Lord and Savior on the morning of February 4, 2019. He passed away peacefully with his wife and children at his bedside.
JM was the first child of Carl and Alma Richardson Fussell of Enon. He grew up on his parent’s small farm and graduated from Enon High School where he played basketball and baseball. JM was a member of Enon Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for over 40 years.

After high school, he dreamed of college at LSU. He worked at the LSU Creamery and lived in quarters over the LSU dairy to finance his education. He graduated with a degree in agriculture. After graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Nell Singleton. Shortly afterward, he was drafted into the Army and was stationed in San Francisco where he served for four years. After completing his service to the Army, he and Mary Nell relocated back to the Enon area where they lived for many years until moving to Franklinton or “town” as it was called.

JM worked for Washington Bank and Trust Co. for many years and later for New York Life Insurance Company until his retirement. He was very active in the Junior Livestock Association and served as a board member for Riverside Medical Center.

He loved to farm, was a good hunter and a better fisherman. He inherited his love for farming from his father, Mr. Carl, and his love of fishing from his mother, Mrs. Alma. One of his fondest memories was fishing on the Bogue Chitto River with his late uncle Tilmond Richardson. They were well matched in skill of rod and reel as well as spinning tales of the one that got away. JM was a wonderful story teller and could entertain his listeners for hours with his vivid recollections of old times past. He had a good memory and could bring the past to life. And for the part of the story where he maybe wasn’t quite sure, he had the gift of a quick mind to fill in the gaps.

JM loved the Lord and Enon Baptist Church. When his health began to fail and he was no longer able to serve as a deacon, he was named a Deacon Emeritus. That was an honor that he cherished until his death.

JM was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Alma Richardson Fussell of Enon as well as his dearly loved sister Carolyn Fussell Murrell of Loudon, Tennessee.

He is survived by his wonderful wife of over 65 years, Mary Nell Fussell of Franklinton, daughter Dr. Stephanie Fussell of Bay Saint Louis, MS, son John and wife Deidra of Bush, La, sister, Peaches Fussell Waller and husband Paul of Jackson, Tn, brother Larry Fussell of Poplarville, MS, grand-daughter Molly Peck and husband Bradley of Madisonville, La, grandson, John Tyler Fussell of Texarkana, Tx, Hunter Fussell of Bush, LA; great-granddaughter Ella Blake Peck of Madisonville, La and his wonderful little dog, Moonbeam Fussell.

Visitation will be at Enon Baptist Church on Thursday, February 7, 2019 from 10 am until 11 am. The service will be at 11:00 am. Burial will be in the Knight Garden of the Enon Baptist Church.

JM was dearly loved by his family and will be missed until all are reunited again in eternal rest. The family would like to thank Dr. Allison Wall of Gulfport for not only providing JM with wonderful medical care for many years but also for being his friend. They would like to thank the staff of Tender Loving Hands Home Care as well as Cannon Hospice Gulfport. They deeply appreciate Enon Baptist Church and the love and care of Brother Chris Wheeler. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Enon Baptist Church.
