Suspected Burglar Jumps into Canal – But Could Not Swim

A suspect, out on bond and wearing an ankle bracelet monitor for previously committing vehicle burglaries, fled from Slidell Police after breaking into several more vehicles on Tuesday morning (July 31, 2018).

Slidell Police were called to the Palm Lake subdivision after a resident found his vehicle burglarized. Responding officers also observed several other vehicles that appeared to have been burglarized.

Officer Clint McCall, and K-9 Quest, started a track and located two suspects hiding in a nearby patch of woods. Both suspects fled. K-9 Quest apprehended one of the suspects, who turned out to be a 16-year-old juvenile. The other suspect,  Raikenzie Durgin (22), jumped into a nearby canal and attempted to swim away from officers. It was quickly discovered that Durgin could not swim. Slidell Police officers rescued Durgin from the water and placed him under arrest.

Durgin, who has been arrested seven times for burglary in the past year, was wearing an ankle monitor as part of his bond requirements. The juvenile was treated for dog bites and transported to the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center.
