Obituary

James "Jim" Toney
August 8, 1952 - August 9, 2018



James Edwin "Jim" Toney, age 66 and a resident of Pine, died early Thursday morning August 9, 2018 at his home. He was a lifelong member of Pine Missionary Baptist Church, where he played the piano and organ and often sang special music during services, while also being a member of the church choir. Jim loved music and was for many years a member of the Gospel Opry singing group that performed at churches and revivals throughout the area. He was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam Era. Jim was always a hard-worker that had several different careers or business ventures during his life. He was a bus driver for many years for the Pine/Thomas schools while also being a deputy with the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office and an officer for the Franklinton Police Department. Jim worked in the box plant at the Temple-Inland paper mill for several years and was also the owner/operator of The Body Shop gym in Franklinton in years past. His last employment before retiring was with Parish Disposal Inc. Throughout this time, Jim also maintained a successful dairy and enjoyed working the land and his herd. He loved spending time with his family and adored his grandchildren.
Survived by: Wife: Viviana Toney of Pine; Father: L.E. Toney of Pine; Brother and Sister in law: Tommy and Gail Toney of Lacombe; Daughter and Son in law: Jennifer and Mike Beninato of Varnado; Son and Daughter in law: William Scott Toney and April Toney of Pine; 6 Grandchildren: Anna Beninato, Will Toney, Grayson Toney, Hannah, Haley, Hayden Jacobs; Great-grandchild: Evelynn Devall; Special Cousin, that was like a sister to him: Libby Stephens and her husband Roger; Also numerous other family members from the Crain and Toney families and many friends.
He was preceded in death recently by his mother Burnettie Crain Toney.
Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home Saturday August 11th from 5 pm until 9 pm. Visitation will continue Sunday at Pine Missionary Baptist Church from 12 pm until 2 pm. A funeral service will be held in the church at 2 pm Sunday with Eld. Glen Stuart and Eld. Adam Luper officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Pine Community Cemetery.
