Obituary

Barry L. Pence, Sr.
July 29, 1944 - August 2, 2018

Barry LeRoy Pence, Sr. departed this earth on August 2, 2018 surrounded by family at the age of 74 after a two year battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
He was born July 29, 2018 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to the late Roy and Reta Pence. Barry was known to have an adventurous spirit to his siblings, cousins, and friends. He was sometimes the class clown, but excelled in his favorite subject of History, particularly in Native American history, the Civil War, Spanish Colonial Louisiana, and the Louisiana Purchase. At the age of 16, he won the Louisiana State University Science Fair for his archeological findings of Native American artifacts.
Into adulthood, his continued interest in archeology sent him on adventures to the Yucatan Peninsula and Veracruz, Mexico where he found many artifacts related to the Olmec and Mayan Indian cultures. His interests in the Civil War and Spanish Americans led him to explore the coasts in Florida of Melbourne, Key West, and St. Augustine where he found artifacts which he proudly displayed and would impart his knowledge to anyone who would listen. Barry and Mary enjoyed traveling with their three children to Mexico, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone Park, the Florida coastlines, the Appalachian Mountains and more.
Barry is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Sylvest Pence of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Children: Lisa Pence of Jackson, MS, Angela Frasier (Anthony) of Franklinton, LA; Grandchildren: Lauren McDaniel, Adriane Phelps, Kandase Frasier, and Austin Frasier; Great Grandchildren: Liam, Haylee, Khloe, Easton, Kilee and Kyndall; Brother and Sisters: Gary (Ruth) Pence, Connie (Darrell) Mayes, and Janice (George) McNabb; Barry also had numerous brother and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, and nephews who he loved dearly.
Preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Reta Pence, and his son, Barry L. Pence, Jr
One of Barry's favorite companions was his little Chihuahua, Chico, who will greatly miss him. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Carolyn Hughes and Carmen and Henry Welch.
We would also like to thank Aime Thompson and others with St. Tammany Hospice.
Pallbearers: Austin Frasier, Don Mayes, Ryan McNabb, Chris Morgan, Henry Welch, Jr., and Henry Welch, Sr.
