Joseph "Poppa Joe" Slocum
January 12, 1942 - January 15, 2018



Joseph Slocum, affectionately called "Poppa Joe" by nearly everyone who knew him, a native of Mt. Hermon and a resident of Independence passed away peacefully at the age of 76 in his home while surrounded by family on January 15, 2018.
As a child, he was a resident of Mt. Hermon yet raised his family in Independence where he enjoyed farming by way of cows, chickens, crops and his trusty International Tractor (Old Red). Poppa Joe, along with his wife, was a dedicated Foster Parent in the State Of Louisiana for many years. He retired from Fred Jones after more than 40 years of loyal employment. He was a decorated US Army Veteran who served in the Vietnam War.
Poppa Joe is survived by one son, Joseph T. Slocum and wife, Jennifer: Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren - Joshua A. Slocum (Kayla Ougel)and son, Joshua A. Slocum Jr., Shelby J. Slocum, Joseph T. Slocum Jr., Jenna M. Slocum, Thomas R. Merritt, Brandon S. Merritt, Scotlynn L. Merritt, Melissa Levatino and her children Joshua Schliegelmeyer, Justin Schliegelmeyer and Jamie Schliegelmeyer; Brothers - Daniel Slocum (Diane), Donald Slocum, Phillip Slocum and T.C. Slocum Jr. (Carolyn); Sisters - Betty Slocum Magee and Martha Slocum Burk (John) along with many nieces and nephews, great friends and family.
He is reunited in Heaven with his loving wife, Maggie Majors Slocum and Son, Dakota Slocum; Parents - T.C. and Omie (Miller) Slocum; Brothers - William Ray Slocum, David Slocum, James Slocum, Paul Wayne Slocum and Samuel Slocum; Sisters - Ruth Slocum King, Mary Lou Slocum and Marie Slocum Burch.
The family will be holding a private Going Home service and reception for immediate family and close friends. Special thanks to the staff of Community Care Hospice who have twice served our family with unsurpassed compassion and dedication. McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, in charge of arrangements.
