Woman Rescued from Bogue Chitto River Near Bush

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office Marine Division was dispatched to the Lock Three Canal on the Bogue Chitto River in the Bush area just after noon on Sunday (September 3, 2017) after a 68-year-old woman got caught in the current of the low head dam’s sill while attempting to rescue her dog.
The woman’s dog was swimming and became caught up in the current. A male friend attempted to rescue the dog and was able to grab the dog’s collar, but the collar slipped off and the dog went over the sill. The woman then entered the water in another failed attempt to save the dog and became caught in the sill current herself.
A STPSO arrived in a rescue boat and, with members of Fire District 9, were able to locate the woman, grab her out of the current and pull her to safety. Acadian Ambulance was standing by at the boat launch and transported the woman to the hospital with moderate injuries.
