STPSO Investigating the Reported Killing of a Pit Bull

Statement by St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office
The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the allegation published on social media involving the death of a pit bull, which allegedly occurred in the Slidell area on Sunday, May 28th.
The allegations are that a man dragged a pit bull behind a pickup truck, ultimately killing the dog. The man then allegedly pulled over, unchained the dog, and left the scene. Witnesses took photographs of the suspect and published them to social media. The Humane Society of Louisiana sent out a press release about this incident yesterday, offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible.
One major problem with how this entire incident unfolded is that no one consulted with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office prior to releasing information about this alleged incident. This has prevented, and made more difficult, the ability of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office detective’s to conduct a fair and unbiased investigation into this matter. We ask that everyone please press the figurative pause button for a moment and allow our investigators to gather witness statements, evidence, and anything else they need in order to come to a conclusion with how this incident should be handled.
The man involved HAS BEEN identified and is currently cooperating with detectives. As soon as the investigation is complete, we will update everyone with the outcome of the investigation. This matter is being taken very serious, and if a crime did indeed occur, the person responsible will be criminally charged.
