The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office responded Wednesday (May 10, 2017 in reference to an infant who wasn't breathing. Karter Smith (7 weeks old) was revived by emergency medical technicians and rushed to a local hospital. Doctors determined that Karter had suffered severe head injuries. Investigators questioned Karter’s father, Anthony Dearmas (25) who told detectives that he punched Karter off of a couch, knocking him to the ground, causing him to fall on his head. Dearmas claimed he became frustrated due to Karter constantly crying.
Detectives placed Dearmas under arrest that evening and charged him with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile. As the week progressed, Karter was determined to be brain dead due to his injuries, and as a result, passed away on Saturday (May 13, 2017).
St. Tammany Parish Coroner Dr. Charles Preston conducted an autopsy and determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head, and the manner of death to be child abuse homicide. As a result, Dearmas was additionally charged Monday morning with first-degree murder.
St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith says, "How someone can do this to a defenseless infant is beyond me. Even more disturbing is the fact this was his own child. Mr. Dearmas is where he belongs, behind bars.”
