Washington Parish Council Addresses Full Agenda

With the Mt. Hermon School Student Council in attendance, the Washington Parish Council addressed a full Agenda on Monday (March 27, 2017): a Public Hearing on an application for funding under the Community Development Block Grant Program for Community Development (primarily related to Housing for low to moderate incomes (at beginning of the video), introduced three ordinances, and approved seven resolutions.
In addition, the Council heard an update from Bishop E. Rene Soule concerning a USDA grant that would impact economic development in the four parish area of Washington, Tangipahoa, St. Helena, and East Feliciana Parishes. (Beginning 6:55 into the video). A Food Distribution Center is being proposed to develop, build, and operate a food distribution facility.
During the Public Participation segment,
  • Mike Daniels described Alive 2017, a Christian music festival to be held April 22, 2017 at the Washington Parish Fairgrounds and invited all to attend. The event is expected to become an annual event. (Beginning 39:30 into the video).
  • Residents Fate Farrell, Richard Berry and Malcolm Moses spoke in opposition to aspects of the Choctaw Road Landfill contract that is up for renewal. (Beginning 42:20 into the video). A Public Hearing will be held on the enabling ordinance April 10, 2017. Later in the meeting, Councilman Perry Talley expressed his concerns with the landfill renewal, beginning 1:06:50 into the video.
  • Ben Clayton spoke to the Council regarding a vision for a Ford truck assembly plant in Bogalusa. (Beginning 51:05 into the video).
Parish President Richard Thomas and his staff gave reports (beginning 54:10 into the video).  President Thomas emphasized the fact that for the eighth year, Washington Parish has failed to receive capitol outlay funds from the state despite the fact other parishes have. Thomas also reminded all in attendance that he is available to discuss any concerns any constituent may have.
