Hammond Man Killed in Crash on I-55 Near Independence

On Thursday (February 9, 2017), Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a two vehicle fatal crash on I-55 north of LA 40 in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash has claimed the life of Hammond resident Michael R. Varnado (56) and injured two others.
Troopers determined that the crash occurred as Carlton W. Walker (34) of Roseland was driving north on I-55 in the right lane, failed to slow for congested traffic and crashed into the rear of a 2012 Volvo Tractor-Trailer. Varnado, a passenger in Walker's vehicle, was pronounced deceased on-scene. Walker and a second passenger, Melanie Mathis (40) were transported from the scene by Acadian Ambulance to North Oaks Health System and treated for moderate injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer, Wesley Moody (50) of Hattiesburg was not injured in the crash.
